Great, now you’ve narrowed down your electrical contractor choices to the ones who are properly trained, licensed and insured. Now what? In every profession, there are good workers and some bad apples that slip through the cracks. Here are some traits and qualities to look for:
Great, now you’ve narrowed down your electrical contractor choices to the ones who are properly trained, licensed and insured. Now what? In every profession, there are good workers and some bad apples that slip through the cracks. Here are some traits and qualities to look for:
- Great communication skills: from the moment you describe the electrical work to the contractor to the completion of the project, there should be constant communication with your contractor, ranging from scheduling the visit for an estimate, to the electrician describing what the work will entail and what is included in the cost.
- Integrity: you don’t want a shady contractor who cuts corners and purposely uses low quality tools and materials to cut their own costs. A good electrician will not only address the specific task at hand, but will also think about longevity. For example, if you’re looking for a chandelier installation, and plan on using incandescent bulbs because they’re cheaper, you may be advised you that LED light bulbs, although more costly upfront, will last years and decades vs. months in incandescents, and consume less energy. In the long run, you would save money through fewer replacements and manual labour to change the bulbs. Good electricians work on your home or business as if they were their own.
- Attention to detail: electrical work requires a meticulous and detail-oriented approach. Your contractor could have a pleasant demeanour, but if their knowledge of current code isn’t up to par, or they make frequent careless errors that can create safety issues, look elsewhere. If you’re taking on a big project such as a new home remodel, it would be worth it to ask the electrician for a couple of references.
- Dependability: it is reasonable to have basic expectations of your electrical contractor. If they forget to show up at a scheduled appointment, or if they fail to rectify an error of their own doing, find someone else.
- Good time management: you want an electrician to show up on time and complete the electrical repair or task in a reasonable amount of time so as to minimize disruptions to your daily life.
Some handy or ambitious owners may ask the following questions:
Do you need an electrician to install a light fixture or light switch? It depends on the light fixture. Changing a light bulb is simple enough, but if you’re talking about a chandelier installation, or installing a dimmer switch, you’ll likely want to involve a professional.
Do you need an electrician to install a ceiling fan? Although it’s easier when there is existing wiring from a previous ceiling fan or light fixture, the ceiling fan is heavier than the typical light, and so requires a dedicated electrical housing box weighted for the fan. If this something you’re not familiar with, it’s best to consult with your licensed electrician.
Do you need an electrician to install a dishwasher or electric oven? Certain household appliances are not as simple as plugging them in and using them right away. In the example of the dishwasher installation, new electrical connections have to be made between the dishwasher and the electrical panel which inconveniently for most, is not located nearby or even in the kitchen, so holes likely have to be drilled to accommodate this and new circuit breakers have to be installed if they’re not already in place.
If there are any other jobs you're unsure whether or not to call an electrician, give us a call anyway, tell us your electrical issue, and we'll either book an appointment with you or direct you to a service provider that better suits the particular job. As a general rule of thumb, if the job involves electrical hardwiring and electrical sources, we would do it. If an issue is with the appliance itself, it typically goes to a handyman or related worker.
